  • There is no greater feeling for me than to see people enact positive and lasting changes in their lives. I have been honoured to share in the stories and journeys of hundreds of people since I began working in the field of mental health, and it continues to be challenging but very rewarding work for me.

I gravitated to the field of Psychology as a teenager and went on to obtain my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology through Athabasca University and a Masters of Counselling Psychology degree from Yorkville University. Throughout my career, I've gained diverse experience working in various therapeutic settings, including the Concurrent Disorders Program at Foothills Hospital, a functional medicine centre, and a long-term care facility before coming to private practice. I work with youth, teens, and adults to address a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, emotional regulation, stress management, familial issues, concurrent disorders, parenting, self-esteem, substance and behavioural addictions, work-related challenges, life transitions, relationships, chronic health conditions, and communication skills.

In my leisure time, find joy in immersing myself in cultural events such as film, music, literature, and theatre. I also embrace the outdoors through activities like hiking, camping, and backpacking, indulge in travel adventures, and nourish my mind through reading.

  • My journey in mental health has equipped me with the skills and insight to delve deep into understanding the root causes of symptomology. My experience as a neurofeedback technician provided invaluable insights into the intricate functioning of the brain and its profound impact on our perception of the world.

Over time, my therapeutic approach has evolved into an eclectic blend, drawing from diverse psychological modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. Additionally, I integrate my understanding of human biological processes including the gut-brain axis, nutritional science, and neurophysiology. I also incorporate elements from philosophy and evolutionary psychology to enrich my approach.

Utilizing a person-centered and humanistic approach, I strive to uncover the innate strengths within each individual I work with. My ultimate goal is to facilitate positive changes and promote growth in various aspects of each person’s life, fostering a path towards healing and transformation.

Registered Provisional Psychologist

  • Hi, I’m Hannah. As a counsellor, my desire is to inspire hope and change through the power of connection, empathy and understanding. Growing up, I yearned for spaces to belong; as a child, adolescent, and teen I tended not to fit the societal molds and as an adult, often feel that spaces where one’s authentic self are accepted are few and far between. This need for belonging has guided my desire to cultivate an inclusive, welcoming space where everyone feels accepted.

I have always been driven to help others; drawn to my early psychology courses in University, I decided to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and as of this spring, completed my Master

of Counselling. I had the privilege of completing my practicum here in Cochrane with our Cochrane Community Mental Health team and am excited to continue my counselling journey as a Registered Provisional Psychologist at Vital Mind Psychology.

I have experience working with individuals of various ages and genders experiencing a variety of difficult circumstances. I am competent in providing care for a large range of concerns including and not limited to stress, trauma, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, behavioural dysregulation and management, life transitions, relationship changes, gender identity concerns, suicidal ideation, and self-harm.

  • My hope for the counselling journey is to facilitate change through the continued curiosity of both the counsellor and client as we take time to understand and explore your emotional experiences. I operate from the understanding that individuals are growth-oriented and that within the safety of the therapeutic relationship, self-awareness and compassion can be cultivated to ultimately create change in one’s life. I am drawn towards a variety of psychological modalities including Mindfulness-Based Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Somatic Experiencing, Narrative Therapy and integrate these to provide the best treatment plan for every client. I am also recently trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) which is a highly reputable therapeutic modality used to treat trauma and other distressing life experiences.

    • Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

    • Master of Counselling Psychology

    • Registered Provisional Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists (P8073)

  • In my daily life I keep busy being a mom to two beautiful little girls and a rambunctious 3 year-old Golden Retriever. As a family, we enjoy going on walks, having dance parties in the living room and baking. I have an affinity for puzzles and am rediscovering the joy of reading after many years of school!

  • For as long as I can remember, I’ve been deeply curious about people. I’ve always cared about what’s underneath our experiences: the stories, nervous systems, and meanings that shape how we move through the world.

Being diagnosed with ADHD and then autism in adulthood was a turning point in my life and sparked my passion for this career. For years, I had been trying to function in ways that went against how my brain actually works — pushing myself to meet expectations that weren’t built for me. When I was diagnosed, there was relief in finally understanding myself, and also grief for how long I didn’t. Learning about my neurotype helped me stop fighting against myself and start creating structure and systems that actually work with the unique characteristics of my mind. It’s what helped me see that there was never anything “wrong” with me, I had just been trying to fit a mold that wasn't built for me and never learned what my brain actually needed to thrive.

That understanding is at the heart of my work. I care deeply about helping people learn how their brains and bodies work together, and how to create environments that support their nervous systems. I believe that caring for our mental health is part of caring for our whole selves and that therapy should be a place where you can feel safe to explore, unmask, and reconnect with who you truly are and what you truly value.

As one of my favourite storybooks reads:

“You can’t go over it. You can’t go under it. You have to go through it.”

To me, that captures what therapy is. It’s not about forcing yourself to “feel better,” but about moving through the things life has thrown at you with compassion, curiosity, and authenticity.

I’m especially passionate about working with:

    • Adults and teens with ADHD and/or Autism — I help people who are newly or late diagnosed with ADHD and/or autism understand their experiences through a neurodiversity-affirming lens, unlearn internalized ableism, and find ways to live in alignment with how their brains actually work.

    • Young adults in transition — I help people in their 20s navigate identity, independence, and burnout by reconnecting with their values, redefining balance, and learning what authenticity looks like for them.

    • Teenagers — I help teens understand their emotions, relationships, and values through open conversation, self-exploration, and gentle guidance that builds confidence in their autonomy.

My work is grounded in compassion, curiosity, and authenticity. I aim to meet each person exactly where they are at and create space for understanding, self-acceptance, and genuine growth.

  • I see therapy as a collaborative process. You bring the lived experience of your own life, I bring my training and understanding of psychology, and together we make sense of what’s happening and move through your experience. My role is to listen closely, take time to deeply understand the unique individual in front of me, and offer reflections, tools, or psychoeducation that might bring clarity. We keep what feels true for you and adjust what doesn’t, always working at your pace and in ways that feel supportive to you.

My work is guided by a neuro-affirming approach, which recognizes neurodivergence as a natural and valuable variation in how human brains work. Rather than trying to make people appear or function more “typical,” I help clients understand their own wiring and discover what truly supports them. Together, we unlearn deficit-based messages, explore strengths, and build systems that honour how each person’s brain and nervous system operate.

Because no two people think, feel, or process the same way, my approach is flexible and responsive. I draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems and parts work, humanistic and trauma-informed principles, and psychoeducation, all grounded in an understanding of the nervous system and regulation. What I bring into sessions depends on who you are and what’s happening in the moment. Therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all; it’s something we shape together.

I work to make therapy feel like a safe space where you can move, fidget, or rest however you need to. My office is sensory-friendly, however for some, that sense of safety comes more easily outdoors. Therefore, I also offer Walk-and-Talk sessions for those who find it grounding to move, think, and talk side by side.

However we meet, the intention is the same: to create a space where you can feel seen, understood, and supported exactly as you are. I believe we are all doing our best with what we have, and that therapy is less about changing yourself and more about rediscovering what’s already there - the parts of you that have always been worthy, capable, and whole.

Julia Sokulski, Counselling Intern, Low Cost Counselling, Vital Mind Psychology, Cochrane, Alberta

Counselling Intern

Julia Sokulski

  • Hi there! My name is Julia (she/her), and I am a master’s level practicum student with a penchant for diving deep into the many complexities of life. Personhood brings with it many non-black-and-white experiences that can sometimes be difficult to navigate on our own, especially when we are required to traverse the metaphorical grey for answers, closure, and (most importantly) healing.

My approach to therapy is grounded in the belief that we all possess capacity for navigating this greyness and finding wholeness; sometimes though, we just need a little help in charting our course. With that, it is my mission to be your co-navigator in your journey toward healing. I offer my experience, curiosity, empathy, and ever-growing knowledge of trauma-informed modalities such as Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) as tools to use along your trek. Through our work together, I hope to help you arrive safe and sound at the life and Self you have always wanted.

While excited to work alongside any individual requiring support, I specialize in working

with adult or adolescent individuals who…

    • Struggle with body image and confidence

    • Are navigating social, academic, and online stresses

    • Are confronted with grief and death

    • Have anxiety

    • Struggle with OCD

    • Face issues surrounding sexuality, sexual identity, and sexual confidence

    • Experience spiritual and existential seeking

    • Identify as women and who are seeking empowerment

Lastly, my professional experience, while eclectic on paper, has been underpinned by a deep desire to help my fellow humans. Be it through working as a private educator, a behavioural interventionist for neurodivergent youth, being a volunteer at Hospice Calgary, working with disabled individuals, or even being a corporate account manager, I’ve learned that there is nowhere I would rather be than beside someone as they journey toward wellbeing.

  • My approach to therapy is rooted in a deep respect for our individual capacity to heal.

Because of this, I see my role as helping you untangle the thoughts, emotions, and experiences that get in the way of you living fully and healthily, whatever that may look like to you. Ultimately, my goal is to help set the stage so that you can play the part you were destined to.

Through a trauma-informed lens, our work will involve a holistic approach to your wellbeing wherein we seek to understand not only your psychology, but your whole self!

We are far more than just heads on a stick; we are bodies, minds, hearts, and souls. My approach thus incorporates elements of IFS, DBT, mindfulness, somatic work, and CBT.

I offer in-person, virtual, and Walk and Talk therapy for those who enjoy being out in nature.
