Repairing After Conflict: Free Couples Worksheet
Every couple argues. What helps a relationship stay strong isn't avoiding fights altogether. It's being able to find your way back to each other afterwards. This free printable worksheet gives you repair phrases to try in the moment, a simple daily check-in, and a step-by-step way to talk through a fight once you've both calmed down.

What is a repair attempt?
The idea comes from Dr. John Gottman's research on couples. A repair attempt is any statement or action, silly or serious, that keeps an argument from spiralling into more negativity. It can be an apology, a touch, a joke, or simply "Can we slow down?" Repairs don't need to be graceful. What matters most is that they get made, and that they get accepted. If your partner reaches out, even clumsily, try meeting them halfway.
Repair phrases to try
The worksheet groups phrases into six kinds. A few examples:
- I feel: "That hurt my feelings."
- Sorry: "I overreacted. I'm sorry."
- Get to yes: "I agree with part of what you're saying."
- I need to calm down: "Can we take a break?"
- Stop action: "We're getting off track. Can we start over?"
- I appreciate: "Thank you for hearing me out."
The stress-reducing conversation
This is a daily check-in that helps prevent fights before they start. Set aside 20 to 30 minutes and take turns talking about stress from outside the relationship, like work, family, or health. Listen with real interest, take your partner's side, and hold off on advice. Understanding comes before problem-solving.
After a fight: talking it through
Once you're both calm, look back on it together, as if you're watching it from a balcony:
- Feelings: each share how you felt, without explaining why yet.
- Realities: each describe how you saw it. Both views can be valid.
- Triggers: what set you off? Does it connect to something older?
- Responsibility: name your own part, and apologize for it.
- Next time: one thing each of you can do to make it go better.
Make it your own
At the bottom of the sheet there's space for "Our repair phrases." Choose a few that feel natural to both of you, including a word or gesture that means "let's reset." Having them agreed on ahead of time makes them much easier to reach for in a heated moment.
